Welcome to the blogger of an absolute beginner...

Well, as a woman of a certain age setting up a business I have heard so much about the power of Social Marketing. I have even been to a seminar this week which made sense, well all except the acronyms. So I am going to give it a go.

I am a great people person and a great coach and if this is the way to tell you all about that...then I am up for moving out of my comfort zone just like a good coach should be. (The words great and technology will never appear in the same sentence for me though.)

We are of course assuming that I ever find this blog again.

Feel the Fear...

This week for Life Coaching purposes only, I like to tell myself, I have been reading the book 'Feel the Fear and do It Anyway' by Susan Jeffers. It has been around for some time but I was wandering along our local high street when I thought...I know, I will check out the local charity shops to see if there are any personal development books I could buy to enhance my library and there is was on the shelf in the very first place I tried.

What has particularly interested me has been the comment that we human beings start from a position of negativity and have to practise at being positive. How true that seems to be and such a shame that it just isn't the other way round, though I do have some  friends who are pretty damn good at it.

The reason it has been a very poignant thing for me to think about this week is that I have had man flu. One of those illnesses where you are too poorly to think straight but not poorly enough to get any sympathy whatsoever. People just want to keep away from you because of all that snot. During this same period I have had to deal with two incidents of people saying 'this and that' which have been difficult and challenging, especially as I have really needed to stay in adult mode for both. I applaud those people who can keep that positive up and I can only declare that I am 'working towards', but every step is worth it.

A welcome break in the hairdresser's chair

Isn't going to the hairdressers brilliant. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my hairdresser does not read this ever, but if she does, I am sure she will smile (thanks Moira).

The two hours it took me to go from before (windswept and grey roots) to after (styled and coloured perfectly) were probably the first sit still and do nothing time I had this week!  But not only is it a great break from the frantic balancing act of having the 3/4 jobs that I have now, it is so entertaining. I think hairdressers should run courses on how they remember everything that is going on in your life from one session to the next 5-6 weeks later. Perhaps if I turn over my colour chart which tells Moira what colour dye she used on me last time it has a list of useful personal tips like my boyfriend's name and business (boat building, if anyone reading this needs a boat). OK, I have been going to her for a long time cause she does such a brilliant job, but even so.

What I like most though about going to the hairdressers is the atmosphere...it is always so lively that I come out with jaw ache from laughing. Without meaning to offend in any way, she has managed to surround herself over the years with the most lovely and lively co-workers and customers with stories to tell and an audience to listen. Some times when I am feeling particularly tired or uppity it takes me a while to get into the groove as the music blasts out and the chattering encourages great laughter.

That is after all what life is all about and I come out feeling like I am having a very good hair day too so if you don't get that feeling from your hairdresser, I can recommend someone local. x

A long weekend

It has been a long weekend, but a fun one. I touched on all my various activities this weekend. Firstly i spent Saturday volunteering for the BraChain. What a party it was too, must have been getting on for 20 people outside the 2ndSkin shop chaining bras together for the world record. I chose to give my thumbs a well deserved break and serviced the tables, running back and forth delivering and collecting bras but soon realised that I had the long straw after all as it was bloody hard work!

Sunday I covered a Zumba class which is always a laugh and I managed to get the headmike to work at the gym in Stourbridge so people could hear me! I had planned to spend the afternoon studying but had a mass panic when our gate opened at 2pm and one of my clients walked in for her Life Coaching session! Shorts off, smart outfit on and whizzed down to greet her. Note to self...make sure your dates are in the diary.

My life might be a patchwork quilt of work, rest and play but it is a fine one. x

3 down and 4 to go

I have a love hate relationship with teaching Zumba. I love getting up in front of everyone and seeing them have a fab time. It is a great way of getting in shape and I hope the craze lasts as Zumba teachers seem to be everywhere - but for some reason I have never felt the need to run my own regular classes.

This week I have 2 friends on holiday so I am covering both their classes. I get the adrenaline rush of teaching without the commitment of having to go back week after week and constantly refresh the class. I have been going to one particular Zumba instructor for a few years now and I am beginning to move on. It seems so difficult to keep things original and exciting which must be why fads like this do come and go...I definitely miss my step aerobics but even that has had its day.

And I suppose the truth is that what I do love about teaching Zumba is that is exposes me to a number of people who do, on one level, want to change their lives because they are exercising. They may never have heard of Life Coaching before so I could really make a difference to this whole experience for them.

I also love the fact that I sleep like a baby and can eat loads when I teach so that is a bonus!

Mad mad mad world

So, you spend time creating stuff on your social networking sites, then you get some referals so you are busy working, then you don't get to keep your social networking sites up to date...how does that work?

OK, so I would be telling a few porkers if I said that I had been working all weekend but I now define sharing a beer or two as networking as you never know who might know someone, who knows someone, who needs some Life Coaching. Personally it still amazes me that a-we are not all getting coaching and b-there are a lot of people out there who still don't even know what it is. Since I have been a Life Coach I have even come across a group c-those people who go to a Coach but don't take out any of the actions they agree to so don't move forward. Why waste their own time and mine?

When we were training I thought I would never turn down clients because they are all precious and have the potentail to develop but I am fast learning that you spend more time chasing and changing appointments when you should really be out there updating your social networking site. So here I am and I have learnt another interesting lesson. Nite. x
